1<S>: We talked about quiet CEOs as introverts as opposed to
extroverts, ...

2<C>: Right.

3<S>: ... who are probably the majority among American business
executives. Now, which type do you prefer to work for?

4<C>: It's kind of hard to say, because both have benefits in
different ways. I'd probably choose extrovert, though, because I
tend to be more introverted, and then extrovert, I think, can often
draw out many of the other people that they are working with.

5<S>: Well, it seems that many American business executives are
extroverted. The fast-talking American executives who are quite
aggressive.

6<C>: But are you comparing them to other Americans or are you
comparing them to people from other cultures? Because I think you
have to be careful to separate those two things.

7<S>: That's right?

8<C>: Right. So even though I consider myself more of an introvert,
I am more extroverted than Japanese people are in various
situations. Not all of them, but sometimes I really notice it.

9<S>: True.

10<C>: Uh-huh. But back to the U.S., if you're comparing bosses in
the U.S. to other people in the U.S., I'd say, yeah, probably
they're more extroverted).

11<S>: One of the guidelines I saw, ggiven to seminar participants
in America, was when there are people from different nationalities
present, Americans should not try to outspeak others.

12<C>: Uh-huh. When I'd talk to people, I'd tell them like "Count to
five before you make a comment."

13<S>: Right.

14<C>: For a couple of reasons. First of all, the people from the
other country might just have a different style. And secondly
usually if you are working with people from another country, they
are working in a second language. And even if they are extroverts,
it might take them an extra, you know, one or two beats to be able
to say what they want to say.

15<S>: Exactly.

16<C>: Yeah, I have a friend from college, who's a really good
person, very nice, helpful, kind, but she talks a mile a minute. And
her mind moves really fast. She is very smart also. And so, I only
see her every couple years and I find it kind of tiring, because I'm
not used to people talking so quickly. Among Americans, she's very
quick and extroverted and talks a lot. So after living here for many
years and not meeting as many people who are that way, ah!... it's
uh...very different.

17<S>: Some extroverted business executives can become ruthless and
abrasive, too.

18<C>: Yeah, I think so. Ruthless might depend a bit on whether
they've made a decision against you or not.

19<S>: That can be positive.

20<C>: Well, I don't know if positive is quite the right word.

21<S>: Uh-huh.

22<C>: But someone, the same CEO, making a decision for you, might
be considered decisive, whereas if they make the decision against
you, they might be considered ruthless.

23<S>: Or autocratic.

24<C>: Or autocratic or all those kinds of negative ways to talk
about good decision makers or clear decision makers.

25<S>: But being abrasive, that can be...

26<C>: Abrasive? I don't think there's any way to make "abrasive"
into a positive. People who are abrasive just need more manners.

27<S>: Ego-centered.

28<C>: Nothing else.

29<S>: They may be ego-centered.

30<C>: Yeah, that could be, too. Yeah, little graciousness, little
more politeness, touch of kindness... maybe would help these people
like that. But, on the other hand, introverts are often considered
rather negative, too, right? Sometimes people who are very quiet,
you can't... can't really know what they are going to do or what
they are going to say.

31<S>: Yeah, they maybe seem to be lacking in aggressive nature or
be too laid-back.

32<C>: Yeah, maybe they just have trouble making a decision. In that
case, I would prefer the louder, more decisive type, because then at
least I always know where I stand.

33<S>: Maybe the answer is the happy medium.

34<C>: That's for sure. Someone who's a good decision maker but has
that bit of graciousness or kindness, so that even if the decision
is bad for you, you understand the person isn't trying to attack you
with it.

■ Would you mind waiting until later to smoke?
35<C>: "Until later" is pretty ambiguous.

■ Do you think you can call me a cab?
36<C>: Sometimes people trying to make a joke. It's a very
well-known joke that everybody thinks is terrible, but they might
look at you and say, "'You' are a cab."

■ Do me a favor and be quiet, will you?
37<C>: This one you should be a little bit careful about, because if
you don't say it in a nice, kind enough voice, it sounds very
sarcastic and nasty.

■ It's OK to help myself, isn't it?
38<C>:  You could probably use this if you're at a friend's house
and they've given you a beer or, you know, a glass of juice or
something, and you get up and, say, walk over towards a refrigerator
and say, "It's OK if I help myself, isn't it?"

39<S>:  いいですよ、とインフォーマルに答えるときは、Can do. と言える。 



40<C>: You can also do the negative, "No can do."

2) "Captain of industry" always makes me think of captains of ships.
★[ There's → They're ] the top boss and in control and responsible
for everybody underneath them. And that brings me over to "ship of
state," which actually refers to what the top politician manages.

＜編集後記＞

連休、いかがお過ごしですか？

私は今日ちょっと都内の下見をしてきました。今度イスラエルからの
お客様をご案内するのですが、奥様が車椅子をお使いになります。

都内のほとんどの駅がエレベーターを配置し、車椅子でも電車への
乗り降りがしやすくなっていますが、まだ不便なところもありますね。

例えば、東京駅、皇居側からエレベーターを使ってホームへあがろう
としたら、利用できるのは丸の内南口だけ。秋葉原は山の手線ホー
ムから総武線ホームへの直通エレベーターはなく、一旦電気街口へ
降りたあと、総武線専用のエレベーターに乗り換える必要がありま
す。何と、半蔵門線渋谷駅には、ホームから改札へのエレベーター
そのものがありません。車椅子のお客様には駅員が対応してくれま
すが、エスカレーターの昇降機もなく、駅員２人が車椅子を支えてエ
スカレーターに乗るんだそうです。

でもメトロはどの駅でも対応が良かったです。質問をしても気持ち良
く答えてくれ、教育が行き届いているなと感じました。渋谷駅も序々
に工事をし、設備を整えていくそうです。

普段、あまり気にしていなかったことも実際に歩いてみると、とてもい
い勉強になりました。疲れたぁ〜！
