Good Old News Wednesday, May 17
-------
Part 1
-------
1<K>: We have Kimberly standing by. Kimberly?
2<Ki>: Hi, Ken.
3<K>: Hi, Kimberly. Any news?
4<Ki>: Yes. I've got some good old news for you. Hello, welcome
to "Good Old News." I'm Kimberly Clipper. It looks like a
Japanese word is making its debut worldwide. This news was
broadcast on February 13, 2006 on NHK Radio Japan.
---------------------
5<K>: Thanks, Kimberly.
6<Ki>: My pleasure.
-----------------------
7<K>: Moving on to section A. Carolyn?
8<Ca>: All right.
9<K>: Chris?
10<Ch>: OK. Your first choice is "Nobel Prize Winner Promotes
Japanese Expression." And the second choice is "African Woman
Wins Nobel Peace Prize."
11<K>: Hmm... Carolyn, what do you think?
12<Ca>: Well, it is true. She did win the Nobel Peace Prize, but
I think this article is about something a little different. It's
about No.1. Promoting a Japanese expression, that is, "Mottainai."
13<Ca>: Let's move on to section B.
14<K>: Chris?
15<Ch>: All right. Your first question is "Why does Ms. Maathai
want to spread the Japanese expression, 'Mottainai,' all over the
world?"
16<K>: Carolyn, what do you think?
17<Ca>: Well, there're two blanks. The first one is "protect,"
and the second one is "environment." So it should read "In order
to protect the global environment."
18<Ch>: that's right. OK, so now for No.2.
19<K>: Carolyn?
20<Ca>: Well, there're two blanks. The first one is
"contributions," and the second one is "sustainable." So the
answer is "She was awarded the prize for her contributions to
sustainable development and peace.
21<Ch>: All right. And now for the next question.
22<K>: Carolyn?
23<Ca>: Well, there're two blanks here too. The first one is
"concept," and the second one is "around." So it reads "She asked
her to introduce the concept of 'furoshiki' around the world as
well.
24<Ch>: OK. And now for the last question.
25<K>: Carolyn?
26<Ca>: The first blank is "promoting," and the second one is
"planting." So it should read "She's been working closely with
local women and promoting the planting of millions of trees across
Africa.
------------------
Commercial Break
------------------
27<K>: So what's the question today?
28<Ch>: Well, today's question is "What time does the Ceramics
Workshop end?"
29<Ca, Ch & K>: We'll be right back after this message.
30<Ca>: Stay tuned.
31<K>: What was the question again, Chris?
32<Ch>: The question was "What time does the Ceramics Workshop
end?"
33<K>: And Carolyn, did you get the answer?
34<Ca>: I sure did. Well, it ends at five o'clock.
35<K>: It does.
36<Ca>: That's right. And I know this because it starts one
o'clock in the afternoon and it's four hours long.
--------
Part 2
--------
37<Ch>: We have Walter standing by. Walter?
38<W>: Hi, Chris?
39<Ch>: Hi, Walter. Any news?
40<W>: Yes, I've got some good old news for you. Hello, welcome to
"Good Old News." I'm Walter Swift. To be a planet or not to be
one, that seems to be the question. This news was broadcast on
February 2, 2006 on NHK Radio Japan.
-------------------
41<Ch>: Thank you, Walter.
42<W>: You're most welcome.
----------------------
43<K> Moving on to section A.
44<Ch>: All right.
45<Ca>: And here're your choices.
46<K>: Chris, what do you think?
47<Ch>: Well I know they talked about Pluto and whether or not
qualifies as a planet, but that's just small part of the overall
article. So I'm going to have to go with No.1.
48<Ch>: All right. And section B, we have our true or false
questions.
49<Ca>: OK, here's No.1. True or false.
50<K>: Chris, what do you think?
51<Ch>: Hmm... Well, every single thing in that sentence is true
except for the very first word.
52<K>: Oh, no.
53<Ch>: Yes, it wasn't German astronomers, but rather American
astronomers. So I'm going to have to say "false."
54<Ca>: Very good. OK. Let's look at No.2.
55<K>: Chris, what do you think?
56<Ch>: That's right. And that is what the German astronomers
discovered. They measured it and found out that was 3000
kilometers in diameter. So I'm going to say "true."
57<Ca>: OK. No.3. True or false?
58<K>: Chris?
59<Ch>: Uh.... I'm going to have to go with true, something like
that will make school students all across the world happy, because
ten is easier to remember than nine.
60<Ca>: And here's the last one. No.4.
61<K>: Chris, what do you think?
62<Ch>: That's right. That is what they talked about at the very
end, that... there's a little bit controversy about whether or not
Pluto and this new object should be a planet. So I'm going to
have to say "true."
63<K>: Well, that's about it for today. So until next time.
64<Ch>: Keep listening.
65<Ca>: Keep practicing.
66<K>: And keep on smiling.
67<Ca, Ch &K>: Bye!
